Dates

26-30 June 2017

Organizer(s)

A joint course with the University of Geneva
Prof. Alicia Sanchez-Mazas, University of Geneva (CH)

Speakers

Prof. Alicia Sanchez-Mazas, University of Geneva (CH)

Dr. Estella Poloni, University of Geneva (CH)

Dr. Mathias Currat, University of Geneva (CH)

Description

This course intends to learn basic theory and practice in molecular population genetics by proposing theoretical introductions followed by a large set of practical applications using available computer programs, as well as several conferences by invited researchers. Each day, the attendees will work on different genetic data sets prepared by the teachers to analyse genetic diversity within and among populations (of different organisms) and discuss their results.

The following topics will be covered:

  1. Analysis of genetic diversity within populations: gene frequency estimation, tests for Hardy-Weinberg and linkage equilibrium, genetic diversity, mismatch distributions, selective neutrality tests (EW, Tajima, Fu, McDonald-Kreitman,...).
  2. Analysis of genetic diversity among populations: genetic distances, molecular distances, analysis of population subdivision, MDS analysis, bootstrap, distance matrix comparison, genetic structure. The computer programs used in this course include Fstat, Arlequin, DnaSP, Structure, R and others.

All charts and graphs will be done by using R and RStudio
