Sequence stratigraphy and reservoir architectures of continental and marginal marine clastic depositional systems: the Mesozoic and Tertiary sequences of central Utah - U.S.

The trip will examine three main sedimentary successions: 1) the world class outcrops of fluvial sytems passing into wave dominated marginal marine deltaics from the Campanian succession of the Bookcliffs (Utah) 2) the Triassic-Jurassic succession of fluvio-aeolian sediments including the Chinle and Navajo Fms and 3) the Tertiary fluvio-lacustrine Green River Formation. Sedimentary composition, facies and architecture of these 3 sedimentary systems with focus on their response to tectonic, climate and sea-level changes will be studied in detail. The field observations, integrated with available core data in situ, will be then used to develop accurate conceptual 3D depositional models and discuss the implications for exploration and exploitation of natural resources contained in similar reservoir rocks.
