Description

Microorganisms are often considered as harmful for cultural heritage. Indeed, microorganisms are a major cause of degradation on cultural artefacts, both in the case of outdoor monuments and archaeological finds. Biodeterioration, microbial corrosion or bioweathering thus greatly contribute to irreversible changes and loss of valuable heritage.

Therefore, conservation strategies are mainly devoted to controlling microbial biofilms and reducing their impact.

Recent advances in our understanding of microbial metabolic activities had led to revolutionary biologically-derived technologies to restore and protect artworks and monuments.

In this symposium we will study those advances and discuss clear examples that are applied currently in the field.
