Description

Tourism is a global phenomenon affecting the lives and livelihoods of an increasing number of people across the world. Its presence has become ubiquitous when discussing, for instance, issues of development, sustainability, heritage, authenticity, lifestyle, gentrification, cross-cultural exchange, mobility, and privilege. Tourism raises important questions about the representation of self and other, the commoditization of culture and identity, the circulation of images and resources, and the ordering of urban and natural environments. Anthropological approaches to tourism provide methodological and analytical tools to understand, more broadly, how power, difference, and inequality play out in the contemporary world.

Participants in the workshop will be able to reflect on the challenges and questions that tourism poses in relation to their own fields of study, benefitting from the wide-ranging expertise of leading scholars in this area of research.
