Description

In this course, the participants are introduced to the current identification techniques for micro-organisms on the species level and get a brief introduction into bacterial taxonomy. In practical exercises, the participants can test different identification methods and compare the results. The following techniques will be introduced: MALDI TOF, fatty acid and biochemical profiling, partial DNA sequencing and whole genome sequencing.
We will address the requirements for the description of new species and the procedure for such a deposit in a culture collection.
The basics and principles of a culture collection will be discussed with the Culture Collection of Switzerland (CCOS) as example, including a visit to the facilities of the CCOS. Together, we will define the principles on how to preserve cultures, manage a collection and formulate the necessary quality criteria to maintain in house collections.
Further topics will be biosafety and biosecurity issues as well as requirement for strain acqui-sition in respect to the Nagoya Protocol.
