Description | For this workshop we will invite some of the most renowned scientists and policy makers in the field of agriculture. During this highly interactive workshop, the experts will present and discuss their vision on the future of agriculture, with an emphasis on the approaches that are needed to achieve worldwide food security for the generations to come. During roundtable discussions and their own summarizing presentations the students will have the opportunity to challenge and critically discuss the visions of the experts. The workshop will take place at the university of Neuchâtel and will be organized in collaboration with CABI Europe-Switzerland in the context of a Masters of Advanced Studies in Integrated Crop Management. |
Program | During the workshop you will be confronted with the challenges that researchers and policy makers are facing in their efforts to assure food security for future generations in a sustainable manner. The focus will be on developing countries and the workshop will also be attended by students from the masters module Sustainable Agriculture and by foreign students that participate in the Masters of Advance Studies in Integrated Crop Management (MAS-ICM, in collaboration with CABI, Delemont). 1st day: Morning: Introduction (explaining CABI's activities in sustainable agriculture and introducing the Plantwise program). MAS-ICM students will present the agricultural challenges in their respective home country. They will present in groups of two (six 15-minute presentations). Afternoon: Three of the invited experts will present their visions for a sustainable agriculture in presentations of 30 minutes each. There will be 10 min for discussion after each talk. 2nd day: Morning: The remaining four invited experts will present their visions (30 minutes plus 10 min discussion. Afternoon: Roundtable discussion with experts and the students (three groups, topics will be chosen during the workshop). 3rd day: Morning: the students prepare their final presentations in which they address the main challenges and possible solutions (six presentations in total). Afternoon: the students give their group presentations (six 15-minute presentations) on how sustainable agriculture may be achieved, taking into account what learned during the speakers contributions and discussions. Main talks: building F, Aula Louis-Guillaume (ALG, 2nd floor) ECTS : 1.5 for PhD students (Scientific activities). For other participants: contact the organisers. Evaluation: Full attendance and active participation Information: Please contact Prof. Ted Turlings or the doctoral program coordinator Registration fee: free for all PhD students of the doctoral programs DPOB, CUSO E&E and CUSO MPS, CUSO Microbial Sciences and IPM and MAS students, included coffee breaks and lunches. Other participants have to pay 60.00 CHF (in cash) at the registration desk on the first day. Meals: More information will be provided soon. For participants of the CUSO doctoral programs in Microbial Sciences the travel costs will be covered. |
Registration | This course is open and free to PhD students (DPOB + CUSO E&E + CUSO MPS + CUSO Microbial Sciences), and mandatory to UniNE IPM master students and MAS-ICM students. External prospect participants can register, but priority is given to DPOB, CUSO E&E, CUSO MPS & CUSO Microbial Sciences PhD students until 5 April 2020.
