Description | Acquisition studies conducted with the constrained formal tools offered by more than 50 years of research in generative grammar have shown the fruitful outcome of a lively dialogue between linguistic theorizing and the empirical investigation of stages of acquisition. Results from controlled experimental investigations on acquisition characteristically offer the special lenses of linguistic development through which the functioning of the internal computational system can be magnified in a fine-grained way. Linguistic theory functions as a generator of new research questions for the investigation of domains of acquisition that appear to be particularly complex to acquire and offers explanatory reasons to account for such complexity. At the same time, results from studies in different modes of typical and atypical acquisition may suggest refinements in the formulation of theoretical hypotheses and they typically offer insights and new subtle evidence, which can enhance our understanding of the functioning of the speaker's internal grammar. This line of research has proven very fruitful since the first work in generative oriented studies on language acquisition (e.g. Carol Chomsky 1969) and has continued to do so ever since up to the most recent developments (for some relevant contribution and reviews at different stages see Belletti & Guasti 2015, Crain & Thornton 1998, Friedmann et al. 2009, Guasti 2017, Hyams 1986, Papafragou and Musolino 2003 and references cited therein). In this doctoral school some prominent specialists in the field will present their current work and provide a state of the art picture of the theoretically inspired experimental work on language acquisition. |
