The study of emotions, which has gained extraordinary recognition in the course of the last ten years, has had a major impact on medieval studies. It has become an integral part of the disciplines of history, philosophy, literature and the social sciences, and incorporated into many other fields within the humanities. Advances in the field of the history of emotions have offered new insights into medieval culture, allowing new points of engagement with historical and literary texts as well as other artefacts. The aim of this doctoral workshop is to bring Swiss doctoral students together with two of the foremost authorities on emotion, Piroska Nagy (Université du Québec à Montréal) and Damien Boquet (Université d'Aix-Marseille). As the lead researchers of the international project EMMA (Les émotions au Moyen Age) and pioneers in the field of emotion studies, these scholars are well-placed to respond to students' projects and provide guidance for further engagement with this field of inquiry. This workshop will be aimed at literary researchers, but will also be of interest to historians, medievalists and scholars from other disciplines. It will consider questions of methodology, multi-disciplinarity and multilingualism, and how the gaps between existing scholarly approaches might be bridged. It will be a bilingual event, co-hosted by CUSO English and Medieval branches, and is thus open to both French and English speakers, who will be able to participate in all sessions.
