This workshop seeks to provide participants with an overview of the techniques, processes, and terminology pertaining to printed book illustration in literary publications. The broad chronological scope of this event will enable participants to better understand the inception and evolution of printed book illustration from the medieval period to the nineteenth century. A range of illustration processes will be covered, with a focus on changing technology and reader expectations: woodblocks, engravings, etchings, lithographs, and mezzotint. The workshop will offer students the opportunity to develop skills in the identification of illustration processes and techniques. It will also invite them to reflect upon a range of ways in which considerations of printed book illustrations can enhance, expand, or disrupt their readings of the texts in which they appear.
