Arrangements (of hyperplanes, of hypersurfaces, of subvarieties) have represented a very rich source of examples and motivations for geometric and topological problems (e.g., Deligne's study of normal crossing divisors; Brieskorn's work on K(pi,1) models for Artin groups; etc.). Accordingly, they can serve as a useful entry door to these geometric and topological objects. The minicourses in our school should serve two purposes: to introduce some aspects of arrangement theory and to show some standard techniques of geometry and topology in action.
