International Summer School (Medieval and Early Modern Studies) : Rencontres européennes en histoire et histoire de l’art

La Summer School for Medieval and Early Modern Studies, organisée et financée conjointement par les institutions de trois pays différents (Suisse, Croatie, Tchéquie), vise à réunir des jeunes chercheurs de back-ground et de traditions académiques différentes puis à les introduire, à chaque rendez-vous, à une région culturelle européenne spécifique : ouest (Suisse), central (Brno), sud (Split et l'Adriatique). Son but est d'enrichir la formation doctorale avec un savoir concret sur les développements historiques et artistiques de ces régions. De plus, il s'agit d'élargir la perception des échanges sur le continent à une échelle plus large. Les rencontres vont insister sur l'apprentissage des techniques et des méthodes des deux disciplines concernées (histoire, histoire de l'art). Ainsi, de brefs séjours de cinq à six jours dans chacun des pôles concernés seront mis à profit pour allier enseignements théoriques en classe, travaux pratiques dans les archives et visites commentées de monuments historiques. Suite à de très positives expériences à Dubrovnik, en 2017, à Brno en 2018, et en Suisse romande en 2019, la Summer School a eu lieu à Zadar en 2022. Chaque année, l'organisation sur place est prise en charge par l'Université hôte (Zagreb 2017; Brno 2018; CUSO 2019, Zadar en 2022). La Summerschool 2024 se déroulera en Géorgie.

The proposed field trip to Armenia and Georgia aims to provide doctoral students with an immersive experience in exploring the rich cultural heritage of the South Caucasus, particularly focusing on key medieval monuments. The itinerary will include visits to significant sites such as medieval monasteries and churches in Armenia and Georgia. Phd candidates will engage in on-site discussions, and scholarly interactions to grasp the distinctiveness and historical significance of these monuments.

The trip's significance lies in its intent to offer a comprehensive understanding of the importance of this cultural heritage and to challenge prevailing art historical narratives that have historically marginalized the artistic and architectural contributions of these areas notably in comparison to Byzantium. Armenia and Georgia possess an extensive array of medieval monuments that have often been overshadowed by the dominant narrative of Byzantine art and architecture. This excursion intends to deconstruct such biased historical perspectives and shed light on the unique artistic and architectural achievements of these regions.

By examining the architectural styles, iconography, religious symbolism, and cultural contexts of these sites, participants will acquire a deeper comprehension of the intricate cultural heritage of Armenia and Georgia. Moreover, through critical analysis and discussions, the trip aims to challenge the traditional hierarchical framework that often subjugates the artistic achievements of these regions to the periphery of Byzantine art history.
